This novel is slow-moving, even plodding at times, as well as a bit didactic in places & I can understand why some readers dismissed it as being overly long & not worthy of so much energy, even if not without some merit. It is less clear why Night Train to Lisbon seems so acclaimed in Europe but not nearly as well regarded in North America. Does this reflect a different pace of life in Europe vs. America or might it also be a result of the seemingly muddled translation from the German, with many odd & even misguided phrasings?Usually available as either four or six berth carriages, couchettes transform from ordinary seating during the day to padded bunks (two or three on top of one another) during the night.
