About this deal

It wasn't only that you didn't see him anymore, meet him anymore. You saw his absence and encountered it as something tangible. His not being there was like the sharply outlined emptiness of a photo with a figure cut out precisely with scissors and now the missing figure is more important, more dominant than all others.” We can be sure that we will hold on to the deathbed as part of the last balance sheet- and this part will taste bitter as cyanide- that we have wasted too much, much too much strength and time on getting angry and getting even with others in a helpless shadow theater, which only we, who suffered impotently, knew anything about. What can we do to improve this balance sheet? Why did our parents, teachers and other instructors never talk to us about it? Why didn't they tell something of this enormous significance? Not give us in this case any compass that could have helped us avoid wasting our soul on useless, self-destructive anger?” a b c Johnson, Daniel (24 February 2008). "Throwing in one life to look for another". Telegraph (UK) . Retrieved 10 March 2021. NOBREZA SILENCIOSA. SILENT NOBILITY. It is a mistake to believe that the crucial moments of a life when its habitual direction changes forever must be loud and shrill dramatics, washed away by fierce internal surges. This is a kitschy fairy tale started by boozing journalists, flashbulb-seeking filmmakers and authors whose minds look like tabloids. In truth, the dramatics of a life-determining experience are often unbelievably soft. It has so little akin to the bang, the flash, of the volcanic eruption that, at the moment it is made, the experience is often not even noticed. When it deploys its revolutionary effect and plunges a life into a brand-new light giving it a brand-new melody, it does that silently and in this wonderful silence resides its special nobility.”

Travelling overnight from London to Scotland and vice versa, the Caledonian Sleeper offers a smooth journey to Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Highlands and beyond. Trains depart six nights a week. This novel is slow-moving, even plodding at times, as well as a bit didactic in places & I can understand why some readers dismissed it as being overly long & not worthy of so much energy, even if not without some merit. It is less clear why Night Train to Lisbon seems so acclaimed in Europe but not nearly as well regarded in North America. Does this reflect a different pace of life in Europe vs. America or might it also be a result of the seemingly muddled translation from the German, with many odd & even misguided phrasings?Usually available as either four or six berth carriages, couchettes transform from ordinary seating during the day to padded bunks (two or three on top of one another) during the night. Funicular: Special mention deserves the elevators, funiculars that allow you to avoid the long and steep slopes of the Portuguese capital while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of the city. Interestingly, the city of Lisbon is not only a geographical place where most of the narrative takes place, but it is also a character in the book. The occurring question throughout is about the role the place plays in our lives and its impact on who we are and what we can do in our lives. We are all patchwork, and so shapeless and diverse in composition that each bit, each moment, plays its own game. And there is as much difference between us and ourselves as between us and others” Paul, Steve (9 June 2008). "Suggestions for all you Night time readers". The Kansas City Star. Disappointment is considered bad. A thoughtless prejudice. How, if not through disappointment, should we discover what we have expected and hoped for? And where, if not in this discovery, should self-knowledge lie? So how could one gain clarity about oneself without disappointment? Both visitors who arrive at the Lisbon airport and those who do it by train or bus to Santa Apolonia, Oriente or Sete Rios stations have different transport options to get to the city centre. Several means of transport can also be used to move around the destination. Danish film director Bille August's film adaptation of the same name, with Jeremy Irons as Raimund Gregorius, was released in 2013.I actually give this book 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3. It was a pleasurable read just not a great one.

Despite all of this, I found the story compelling. Gregorius’ investigation reveals lives lived in fear under the dictatorship of Salazar, leader of the Estrada Novo, the authoritarian government that ruled Portugal with an iron fist until 1974. I knew nothing about this terrible period in Portuguese history.

Might call to mind the magical realism of Jorge Amado or Gabriel Gar He becomes curious about Prado and, once in Lisbon, decides to speak to those who knew him, to find out more about his life. Almost without exception, Prado’s friends and family are open to discussing their relationship with Prado. Unlikely? Yes, it’s all very unlikely and yet....
